Today we have some confirmation on that front and the Kharadron Overlords have been announced. We have 5 slated before the new Seraphon book in the summer and we had some thoughts about which books would be in what order. Games Workshop has been teasing the line-up of battletomes coming. The Kharadron Overlords are coming to a landing near you! Be prepared to spend a LOT of time on this as picking the covers is a great creative outlet.Looks like we know which battletome is now on deck for release. Pick just one book and make a totally garish cover to test the principle. I know this is a lot to take in but start by looking at BCS and seeing how I did it then copy everything you need. There is (in SSE) also a reference to a Texture Set which cuts the number of files needed in the mod. Each book has a STATIC entry telling it what Inventory Mesh to use and a BOOK entry with the actual book contents, weight, OBDN size and of course the reference to the World Mesh. I have a vague recollection that SSE actually allowed me to just stuff in a generic texture there and overwrite it in the ESP with a reference to a Texture Set.Īs for getting all this into a mod, I just used TES5EDIT rather than the Creation Kit. You can use NIFscope to look at the BCS meshes (there are two sizes of book remember). Go easy on that layer and make it quite dark otherwise your books will look smooth and plastic. The alpha channel on the top of it is the specular or "shininess" layer. The main RGB layer is that purplish texture which holds the "bumpiness" up/down information. In Skyrim, the xxx_n.dds file is in DXT5 with mipmaps format. This tool is a REAL timesaver for making normal maps and has really paid for itself in terms of convenience.

I bought an Indie license for Quixel Suite which includes NDO. If you are doing a lot of books, you have to consider what your time is worth.

A free (and unsupported) tool if you can find it is CrazyBump but it takes a while to get good results. You will need a tool to generate your normal maps and specular maps (they go together) for the books. If you put that coffee ring in the height map, it will appear on the normal map texture and look as though the cup had acid in it or something! Scratches and lettering go in the height map, dirt does not. Imagine a leather cover with a coffee ring on it. Remember as well that "dirt" will not usually appear on the height map. This is why you will see many of the books with embossed down letters have a height map where the letters are masked onto to a Black colour layer. If it is a raised ridge it needs to be lighter. If there is something embossed down into the cover, it needs to be black, regardless of the colour of the embossing. This group makes the texture monochrome and helps with the "up" or "down" elements of the cover. You will see in my PSD files there is a "Height" group. Next you have to think about the normal map. There should be no alpha channel for the main texture as it is not needed. The settings you need are DXT1 with mipmaps. I am not sure if there is an equivalent for GIMP. There is a Nvidia DDS plugin for Photoshop. You will want to save the main texture of your book as a DDS file. I tend to play a game of "Who wrote a book like this." Think about whether your book is academic (ornate or smart leather cover), cheap and mass-produced (fabric cover) or has just a simple texture with little ornamentation. You can easily change the tint of the cover or the dirt/distressing later. dds files till you find a book that is the right sort of cover for what you are interested in. GIMP should be able to as well but IrfanView is a great lightweight image viewer. IrfanView has a plugin which allows that easily. dds files and make sure you can view them. Start by unpacking the BSA file so that you have the.

You will also need the Fonts download which is over on the old Skyrim Nexus page for the Book Covers mod. As for folks wanting to do their own covers, I am more than happy for anyone to start with the Book Covers Skyrim PSD source files which are available here. I spent quite a lot of time getting permission from folks on deviantART to be able to use their drawings. I remember the trickiest part of making the covers was finding acceptable source textures. If there's a tutorial somewhere, maybe you would just point me at it? If that worked, I might go on to something more ambitious, like the books in Beyond Skyrim - Bruma or Qaxe's Questorium, which always look so drab among your beautiful creations. I wonder if you'd tell me, what is the procedure involved in making a cover for a book? I recently dipped a toe into modding, and I thought I might try with the History of Heljarchen Farm.
